Who are the Amata Musica?
Martin Gatt (bassoon),
Margaret Lynn (piano),
Susan Dent (French Horn),
Leslie Sheills (flute),
Jane Finch (oboe), and
Colin Parr (clarinet).
Amata Musica In 1984 the bassoonist, Martin Gatt took a 3 year sabbatical from his position of principal in the
London Symphony Orchestra to become the first Head of Wind in the newly opened Hong
Academy for Performing Arts, where he met Margaret Lynn, the distinguished pianist and Head
of Academic Studies. During the three years they performed recitals, broadcasts and recordings
together and when Martin returned to the UK in 1987 to resume his career in the LSO they
continued their partnership, recording and performing as a duo.
In 1998 Jane Finch ,who had enjoyed a fine career playing in the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra
and Bournemouth Sinfonietta and Martin began playing chamber music together and were
eventually joined by Colin Parr an old college friend of Martin's and the principal clarinettist of the
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra for many years, when he retired to Totnes in Devon.
Leslie Shiells , the Head of Wind at Millfield school, and the ex principal flautist of the South
African Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra, joined the group, and when Sue Dent, one of the
foremost exponents of the natural horn and a Professor of both natural and modern horn at the
Royal College of Music completed the ensemble it assumed the title of Amata Musica.
